Heavy vehicle movement by The Ministry of Defence has lead to the upgrading of verges to the busy A696 Ponteland to Otterburn section, Tyne and Wear in North East England. Works had originally commenced with pre-cast blocks, but the decision was taken early into the project to switch to the cast on site Grasscrete system with its steel reinforced structure.
Work has now begun on the 7500 square metre project and a unique feature is the requirement to introduce an earth brown pigment to the concrete, to minimise the impact on the environmentally sensitive location.
A key advantage with Grasscrete is its ability to withstand heavy load even before the grass has established.
