Substantial urbanisation of Hong Kong’s New Territories combined with its seasonal rainfall patterns is potentially a cause of significant downstream flooding in heavily populated Kowloon. The once traditional solution of solid concrete drainage channels posed in themselves, an environmental impact in the loss of natural fauna and flora. To counteract this, GRASSCRETE was used to massive effect on this 1985 scheme and its success has contributed to fundamental change in policy towards environmental engineering for the territory. |
